Mining PSU Round Up Power Supply Unit Comparison and Review A good mining rig needs a good PSU or two. Because the goal is to deliver steady 24/7 power to the rig, a really good PSU is something I don't cheap out on. Stick to the top PSU brands: reputable names like EVGA and Corsair. So what do I look for? What is considered a recommended power supply? Right off the bat, brand reputation and warranty are supreme. A company that backs up their product with at the very least a 5-year warranty. Efficiency - Gold rated PSU or better (Gold - Platinum - Titanium). Also absolutely crucial is low voltage fluctuation (ripple) under full load and high temps. Also considerations: good fan, thick (min 18AWG) cables, standard protection features (Big 6: Over-Current-, Over/Under-Voltage-, Over-Power-, Short-Circuit-, and Over-Temperature Protections) and quality-tested signal-to-noise ratio and delay. All that being said, could you get by with a cheaper off-brand PSU? Absolutely - but consider that the cheaper PSU's don't have many or most of the above efficiency and protection criteria. Reputable manufacturer and warranty ➣ efficiency ➣ low ripple ➣ cable gauge ➣ fan/cooling ➣ Over/Under Protections ➣ signal/noise ratio and delay The lists below may seem overwhelming (and it took me forever to put together), but it's easy to decipher. First determine the wattage you need, then determine the total number of connectors. Remember that a riser can be powered via either a 6-pin or a peripheral (molex) connector. If electricity is expensive (over $0.10/kW) then definitely opt for a Platinum or Titanium efficiency rating if available. Also remember that two or more PSU's may be used together in sync via an adapter cable.
